Founder

Young Kwang Chae

Dr. Chae was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. He attended Seoul National University College of Medicine and then moved to the U.S. and earned his MBA and MPH at Johns Hopkins and completed internal medicine residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center. Currently, he is a medical oncologist at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, where he works to bridge the gap between scientific breakthroughs and clinical medicine. 

 

Dr. Chae enjoys spending time with family and friends, biking, playing tennis, and snowboarding. He reads and writes many poems, and Dead Poets Society is one of his favorite movies. With a passion for teaching, he loves working with students and trainees in his Grapevine ministry and the Global Medical Missions Alliance.

Liam Chung

Liam is from Fairfax, Virginia and grew up in LA. He has a BS in Life Science and BioTechnology and a BA in Theology from Yonsei University, a MPH from Columbia University, MD from St. George’s University of London. Liam enjoys traveling, basketball, snowboarding, jazz, and playing the guitar. He is passionate about social justice, health and human rights, health equity and disparities. And he is a huge FOODIE!

Sally Jung

Sally Jung was born in South Korea and grew up in California. She is a senior at Northwestern University, studying Neuroscience and Global Health. Sally hopes to become a physician who takes a holistic approach in diagnosing no only at the minute cellular level but also within a broader social context by being educated about the psychological factors. She also hopes to become “Doctor Without Borders” in the future to help the Third World Countries. In her free time, Sally enjoys meeting people, exploring new restaurants, and playing music!

Ilene Hong

Ilene Hong is from Northern Virginia and is a second-year undergraduate studying neuroscience at Northwestern University. She hopes to work in pediatrics one day and be a shoulder for children and teens to lean on. Outside of school, Ilene loves taking walks, watching sunrises/sunsets, eating copious amounts of PopCorners, and napping with her dog, Choco.

William Cheng

William Cheng was born in Taiwan and raised in Carmel, Indiana. He is currently a senior studying Biology at Northwestern University on the pre-med track. William hopes to become a physician with a focus on either internal medicine or trauma. He also hopes to strengthen physician-patient interactions and improve quality of care. William’s hobbies include hiking, traveling, singing karaoke, and taking pictures of food.

Shauna Cho

Shauna Cho was born and raised in California. She graduated from the University of California, Davis with a Bachelors of Science degree in the study of Biological Sciences. Shauna hopes to become a health professional that continuously learns for the benefit of patient care. In her free time, she enjoys playing basketball, listening to music, playing the viola, filming her lifestyle, exploring new locations with friends and family, and creating with her hands (culinary dishes, bracelets, rings, etc).

Yoonhee Choi

Yoonhee Choi grew up in Seoul, Korea and is currently in New York-Presbyterian/Queens IM residency pro-gram as a PGY-1. After her experiences with clerkships in the US and being an exchange student in Canada, she wished to be trained in an environment with cultural, pathological, and ethnic diversity, for which she landed in the melting pot of NYC. When she is not trying to survive as an intern, she likes to hang out with friends (especially canine friends), play badminton, bike in the park, and go to baseball games or concerts.

Emma Yu

Jimin Hwang

Jimin Hwang was born and raised in Daejeon, South Korea. She moved to Busan for high school, then to Seoul for medical school; upon graduation, she decided to broaden her horizons for further studies and training. She is currently finishing up her Master of Public Health degree in Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is headed to Dallas for Internal Medicine residency at UT Southwestern. Her interests lie in cardiovascular and renal disease, health equity, and health communication; she is exploring ways further the reach of healthcare in the population. Outside of school and work, she likes to travel, draw cartoons, sing and play the guitar. She is also an avid foodie.

Cyra Kang

Cyra Kang was born and raised on Jeju Island in South Korea. From a young age, she had a passion for connecting with others and helping them in life's most difficult moments, first through music—perhaps the best medicine for a wounded soul—then psychology and sexual abuse counseling, and finally medicine. She is currently an internal medicine resident at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

Leeseul Kim

Leeseul Kim was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. Working as an internal medicine intern in Evanston, she loves to investigate how compassion and acts of kindness can change the quality of medical practice. She loves living in Chicago, trying food from different cultures, patting her neighbors’ dogs, and taking photographs of family and friends. Her favorite quote, by Steve Maraboli, is “A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”

Grace Lee

Grace Lee is from New Jersey and is currently a third-year undergraduate studying biology and sociology at Northwestern University. She hopes to one day become a physician who can help those most in need. In her free time, Grace enjoys watching football, drawing on her iPad, and reading about book recommendations (rather than actually reading the books themselves).

Youjin Oh

Youjin Oh was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She attended Seoul National University College of Agriculture and Sciences and Korea University College of Medicine. A photo of the volunteers of  Medicines Sans Frontiers, whose smile seemed like the brightest smiles in the world, inspired her to become a doctor. After oncology winter school in her last year in Germany, she got interested in clinical research and unsolved questions in medicines. She believes in the strength of words and importance of ways to communicate with others compassionately. In her free time, she enjoys spending time in nature, hiking, and walking. She also loves music and guitar.

Alice Lee

Alice Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea and grew up in Northern Virginia. She is a third-year undergraduate at Northwestern University, studying biology and psycho-logy. Spending many nights in the emergency room because of her brother’s severe eczema sparked her interest in becoming a physician. She also wants to be able to help relieve patients' psychological sufferings. As an extrovert, she enjoys spending time with her friends, going to cafes, and playing board games. She also can’t live without fruits!

Dong-Uk Lee

Dong-Uk was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. From his experience of working as a chief state representative of Korean public health doctors, he believes that healing blooms within sincere relationships amongst people. He joined the Pacemakers project with such a belief and is thus interested in cultivating meaningful interactions between healthcare providers and patients. He likes Italian history and culture so much that he enjoys watching Italian soccer games (especially Juventus) while eating Hawaiian pizza with an iced Americano.

Seung Hee Ryu

SeungHee was born in Daegu, South Korea. She grew up in Chicago, Daegu and Alabama, and has worked in Pohang and Seoul. Growing up as a nomad, she became passionate in the awareness of cross-cultural aspects of human relationships, and hopes to strengthen patient-health care provider relationships through Pacemakers. In her free time, she enjoys walking and meditating.

Bhoomika Sukhadia

Bhoomika Sukhadia was born and raised in India and came to the US after graduating from medical school. Currently pursuing internal medicine residency in Chicago. Outside of medicine, I like to spend time with family and friends, hiking, kayaking, strolling at Lake Michigan, and exploring coffee shops or other local stores.

Emma Yu

Emma Yu was born in South Korea and grew up in Ohio. She is currently attending Northwestern University as a third-year undergraduate studying Neuroscience and Data Science. She hopes to become a physician who can guide patients to better health. In her free time, she likes grabbing food with her friends, watching YouTube videos, and stargazing.

Zoe Zhang

Zoe Zhang was born and raised in Houston, TX. She is currently a junior studying Neuroscience and Psychology at Northwestern University. As a people-person, Zoe is at her best when connecting with others. She enjoys direct and personal interactions and strives to make easy and comfortable conversation. Medicine gives her the opportunity to be one who can make personal connections with patients while providing them with best solutions to their medical conditions. She also enjoys going on food adventures, hiking, and spending quality time with the people around her!

Lena Chae

Lena is a high school student in the Chicago suburbs. In her free time, she enjoys learning new languages, quality time with friends and family, and traveling/exploring new places.
